Vivian Janet Palaia Rickey Obituary
Vivian Janet Palaia Rickey, affectionately known as Janet, departed this life peacefully on June 22, 2024, in Columbia, Maryland. Born on April 18, 1947, in Long Branch, New Jersey, Janet was a beacon of love and kindness, leaving a lasting impression on everyone who knew her.
Janet was the cherished wife of Dwight Thomas "Tom" Rickey, with whom she shared 47 years of marriage and built a loving family. She was a devoted mother to her sons, Adam Thomas Rickey and his spouse Kira Adelade (Selman) Rickey, and Philip Anthony Rickey and his partner Kevin Inghram Jr. Janet was overjoyed by the births of her grandchildren, Jacob Thomas Rickey and Kathryn Marie Rickey, whom she cherished beyond measure.
Daughter of the late Janet Virginia (Fesler) Palaia and the late Frank Lincoln Palaia, Janet inherited her father's outgoing personality and carried a special bond with her mother, who sadly passed away when Janet was just 23 years old. Her brother, Frank Lincoln Palaia Jr., and his wife Judy Palaia, were beloved members of the family, often traveling up from Florida to reminisce and share a meal of Frank Sr’s made-from-scratch meatballs. Janet also had a close bond with her cousin Patty Wardell of Eatontown, New Jersey, sharing frequent phone calls to update each other when they couldn’t visit or spend time together.
Janet graduated from high school in Long Branch, New Jersey. She worked at the National Security Agency as a secretary for 11 years where she made friends she kept in close contact with for decades. With the arrival of her children, Janet made the decision to leave her career to dedicate herself to her family, creating a warm and nurturing home.
A longtime Orioles fan, Janet's love for baseball was only surpassed by her love for her family. For over three decades, the family enjoyed annual vacations to Holden Beach, North Carolina, along with brother-in-law and sister-in-law Philip and Wanda Howard of Lucasville, Ohio and their daughter Ann, creating lifelong memories. The family’s photos from the early 1990s through present still hang at Fantasy Isle ice cream shop and mini golf. Janet had a passion for the beach, and it was where she felt most at peace. As much as she loved the beach, she made sure her family was able to see many sights and create lasting memories. Family members fondly recall a special trip to the Grand Canyon, where they were greeted by an unexpected snowfall on Father's Day. The times she spent with her family and friends will forever be cherished and celebrated.
Always described by those who knew her as warm, kind, and generous, she had a gentle spirit and compassionate nature. Her presence will be profoundly missed, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of those she touched. As the sun sets on Janet's journey, her family takes comfort in knowing that her light will continue to shine on the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her. A life beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered.
The family will receive friends on Friday June 28, 2024 at Slack Funeral Home, P.A., 3871 Old Columbia Pike, Ellicott City, Maryland 21043 from 4:00-5:30 pm. A celebration of Janet's Life will begin at 5:30.
